United by Pink Against Violence
Savremena Elementary School dedicated the day to the raising of awareness on peer violence. Through conversation and joint activities, the students learned about the importance of support and understanding among peers. Pink Shirt Day was not only about wearing a certain color; it was the day when the school spirit transcended the typical activities, directing the focus towards the creation of a safe and supportive environment for all the students.
How did it all start?
The tradition of pink shirts originated in Canada, in the year 2007, as a reaction against peer violence, when two students defended their peer who was the subject of a joke because he was wearing a pink shirt. They decided to raise awareness and act against violence by coming to school in pink and distributing pink shirts to other students. This display of solidarity quickly swept over the school, turning it into a sea of pink shirts and sending a strong anti-violence message. This occurrence inspired a global movement against peer violence, now recognized as the Pink Shirt Day.
