Parents at Work: Jobs Through the Eyes of Children
Learning by example – parents in the role of teachers
At Primary School Savremena, we strive to connect knowledge with real life and everyday experiences. The “Parents at Work” project allows students to do just that – to learn about their parents’ professions, work environments, and daily responsibilities in an engaging and educational way. Through this activity, children get a chance to explore the world of work, develop curiosity, and gain a better understanding of different careers – all with the support of their families and a school that fosters strong parent-school collaboration.
What is the “Parents at Work” project?
The “Parents at Work” project is designed to help the youngest students at Savremena discover the world of work, business, and various professions in an interactive and age-appropriate way. By visiting the workplaces of their parents, children get a first-hand look at what a typical workday looks like, what their parents do, and why education is so important for their own future. Together with their class, students will visit a parent’s workplace, talk to them, and experience school beyond the classroom – through real-life learning and practice.
As hosts, parents will:
- present their profession in a way students can understand;
- introduce students to the workspace and explain what their company does;
- describe a typical workday;
- answer students’ questions and share interesting stories from their job.
These real-world experiences spark children’s curiosity, broaden their perspective, and motivate them to learn: by helping them see how knowledge is applied in everyday life.

How does the “Parents at Work” project benefit students?
The “Parents at Work” project offers great value to students by giving them a concrete, relatable, and inspiring glimpse into the adult world. By stepping into their parents’ workplaces, children develop a clearer understanding of different careers, professions, and industries they might pursue in the future. This experience helps them connect what they learn in school with the real world, understand its relevance, and recognize the importance of education in making informed and meaningful life choices.
It also helps students develop empathy and appreciation for their parents’ hard work, by witnessing the effort and dedication behind every workday.

Memorable learning – curiosity fuels knowledge
For younger students, visiting their parents’ workplaces is an exciting and unique experience. Every trip outside the classroom feels like an adventure, and discovering what their parents do sparks genuine enthusiasm and countless questions. This type of interactive learning encourages their natural curiosity and helps them connect school lessons with the real world more easily. They learn through direct experience, conversation, and observation – making knowledge more lasting, meaningful, and fun.
