Parents at Work – Beo Dental – Dental Health Workshop

Workshop on oral hygiene and proper tooth brushing

The “Parents at Work” project at Savremena Primary School brings something special – an opportunity for children to see what their parents do, learn directly from experts, and discover professions firsthand. This time, the first-grade classroom transformed into a small dental office when one student’s mother, Andrijana, a specialist in periodontology with oral medicine from Beo Dental clinic, held a workshop on oral hygiene and proper tooth brushing.

Before the children were a jaw model with teeth, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and an expert who knew how to explain why teeth are important and how to properly care for them. Andrijana carefully showed what teeth look like, explained what happens when we don’t brush them properly, and why it’s important to take care of them from an early age. Children listened carefully, looked at the model, asked questions – because this wasn’t an ordinary lesson, but an opportunity to learn from someone who does this professionally.

Practicing Proper Technique

But the workshop wasn’t just theory. Andrijana demonstrated the proper tooth brushing technique – how to hold the brush, at what angle, how long to brush, which movements are correct. She used the jaw model to show how the brush should go over all sides of the teeth, how not to skip any part, and why it’s important to brush even those back teeth that we don’t see easily.

And then came a special part – children brought their own toothbrushes from home. Andrijana examined them, checked whether it was time to replace the brushes, explained how to recognize when a brush is worn out and why it’s important to change it regularly. Each student received feedback about their brush, learned when to ask parents for a new one, and understood that dental care begins with the basic tool – a proper toothbrush.

Diploma of Bravery and Healthy Habits

At the end of the workshop, each child received a “Diploma of Bravery” – recognition for participation, but also a reminder that dental care is something that requires daily discipline and courage to build and maintain habits. Children learned that oral hygiene isn’t just brushing teeth – it’s part of a healthy lifestyle, prevention that protects, and a habit that’s built from a young age.

The “Parents at Work” project shows that parents can be the most powerful teachers – because they bring real experience, passion for their work, and the ability to introduce children to the world of professions in an authentic and inspiring way. And as first-grade students left the workshop with diplomas in hand, they knew a little more about how to take care of themselves – and perhaps some of them imagined themselves one day in a white coat, helping others preserve their smiles.
