A Small Orchestra at Savremena

Music That Is Learned and Experienced

Students of Class I-2 at Savremena Elementary School experienced a truly special and memorable music lesson, thanks to their classmate Relja Popović, who brought his accordion to school. This moment was much more than a simple presentation of an instrument—it became an inspiration for the entire class and an opportunity for a completely new learning experience. During previous lessons, students had already been engaged in creating their own instruments, such as drums, shakers, and castanets, exploring how sound is produced and how different materials influence its intensity and tone. That is why Relja’s accordion naturally became the next step in their learning journey, allowing them to connect theoretical knowledge with real-life experience. The excitement in the classroom was immediate, as students eagerly observed the instrument, listened carefully, and asked questions, fully immersed in the process of discovery.

Together in rhythm and sound

Guided by Relja’s playing, the students spontaneously formed a small classroom orchestra. Each child picked up their instrument and joined in, following the rhythm and trying to harmonise their sound with others. This shared musical activity was filled with energy, joy, and a strong sense of teamwork. Through playing together, students developed their sense of rhythm, coordination, and listening skills, while also learning how to collaborate and function as a group. At the same time, they explored the accordion as an instrument—learning what it is made of, its main parts, and how sound is produced. By observing the movement of the bellows and the use of keys and buttons, they connected what they heard with what they saw, deepening their understanding in a meaningful way. This kind of hands-on learning transforms the classroom into a dynamic and engaging environment, where students actively participate and learn through experience.

Knowledge that stays through experience

An additional highlight of the lesson was the participation of their teacher, Milica, who joined in and played the accordion, recalling her own university days. Her involvement added a new layer of inspiration and showed students that a love for music can last a lifetime. The classroom atmosphere was filled with smiles, excitement, and a sense of togetherness, demonstrating how powerful experiential learning can be. Beyond developing musical skills, students also built confidence, creativity, and the freedom to express themselves. Moments like these leave a lasting impression, shaping a positive attitude toward learning and encouraging curiosity. At Savremena Elementary School, we believe that the most valuable knowledge is gained through experience—when students explore, create, and truly feel what they are learning, making education both meaningful and unforgettable.
