Rowing with an Olympian

Life Skills Programme

As part of the Life Skills programme, students of Savremena Primary School had the opportunity to take part in a workshop that combined sport, learning, and personal development in a truly unique way. The guest of the school was Nenad Beđik, an Olympian and Serbian national rowing team member, who shared his knowledge, experience, and the values that guided him throughout his professional career.

Through a direct encounter with an athlete who competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics and 2016 Summer Olympics, students gained a deeper understanding of what dedication, perseverance, and continuous self-improvement truly mean.

The workshop, held on 24 March at the school, was filled with energy, curiosity, and active participation from the very beginning. During the introductory discussion, students learned about the journey from the first training sessions to the world’s biggest competitions, as well as the importance of discipline, resilience, and mental strength in achieving top results. This approach to learning—through authentic experience and real-life role models—is one of the key values of the Life Skills programme.

Rowing as a Challenge: Strength, Technique and Personal Progress

The central part of the workshop featured rowing ergometers, giving students the opportunity to try rowing and experience what a real professional training session looks like. Each student had the chance to test their strength, speed, and endurance through short but intensive challenges.

Particularly exciting were the speed challenges, where students pushed their limits within a limited time frame, developing both a competitive spirit and a desire to improve.

Under the expert guidance of Nenad Beđik, students learned the basics of proper rowing technique—from body position and hand placement to movement coordination and breathing. Through hands-on practice, they gradually understood the importance of consistency, patience, and focus in any form of progress.

Learning through movement and personal experience proved to be highly effective, allowing students to actively participate, explore their abilities, and push their own boundaries. Activities like these contribute to the development of well-rounded individuals, supporting both physical and mental growth.

Lessons That Last: From Dreams to Achievement

One of the most valuable parts of the workshop was an open discussion with the Olympian, during which students had the opportunity to ask questions and gain insight into the life of a professional athlete. Nenad spoke honestly about the challenges he faced, the difficult moments, and the motivation that helped him continue and achieve his goals.

Students were particularly interested in the level of effort required to reach top results, as well as what preparation for major competitions looks like. Through this conversation, they learned that success is never accidental—it is the result of long-term effort, discipline, and belief in oneself.

The workshop gained additional value through collaboration with Veslački klub Partizan, one of the most successful rowing clubs in Serbia, known for developing generations of top athletes. This partnership allowed students to gain a broader understanding of the role of sport in personal development.

Events like this once again confirm that Savremena Primary School is not just a place where knowledge is acquired, but an environment that fosters confidence, responsibility, and perseverance. The Life Skills programme aims to prepare students for real-life challenges through meaningful experiences that inspire, motivate, and stay with them long after the classroom.
