Life Skills Programme – Relax Kids Workshop

A workshop that teaches children how to listen to themselves

As part of the Life Skills programme, Savremena Primary School hosted a Relax Kids workshop focused on developing children’s emotional literacy, self-regulation and inner balance. Through carefully designed activities, students had the opportunity to learn how to recognise their own feelings, calm themselves and reconnect with their inner world. The workshop was dynamic, yet gentle and fully adapted to the children’s age and needs. The goal was not simply “to be calm”, but to learn how to reach a state of calm independently.

The programme was delivered using the Relax Kids methodology, which guides children from movement and play towards gradual relaxation. This approach allows children to naturally release excess energy before entering a state of focus and calm. The classroom atmosphere was safe, supportive and free of pressure, enabling students to express themselves freely and take part in all activities with confidence.

Seven steps towards self-regulation and balance

The workshop was structured around seven connected stages that follow a child’s natural energy cycle. It began with movement and play, allowing children to release energy, develop coordination and strengthen their sense of togetherness. Active games contributed to a positive mood and greater openness for further activities, particularly benefiting children who find it more challenging to maintain focus for longer periods.

Stretching exercises followed, helping students become more aware of their bodies and breathing. Through simple, gentle movements, children learned to recognise the difference between tension and relaxation. This transition from active to calmer activities was essential for the next stages of the workshop and supported deeper concentration and engagement.

Special emphasis was placed on activities that develop awareness of oneself and others. Through gentle exercises focused on emotions and breathing, students learned how to calm themselves in moments of excitement or stress. Breathing exercises helped them become aware of their breathing rhythm and its impact on the body and emotions. Children naturally noticed that after just a few minutes of focused breathing, they felt calmer and more secure. The workshop also encouraged the development of empathy and mutual respect, as children learned to recognise personal boundaries — both their own and those of others. Such activities strengthen social skills and contribute to a positive group dynamic within the classroom.

Learning to feel and breathe

The final part of the workshop was dedicated to affirmations and guided relaxation. Through simple, positive messages, students learned how to speak about themselves with greater confidence and self-understanding. The affirmations were age-appropriate and designed to strengthen children’s sense of self-worth and emotional security.

The workshop concluded with a short guided relaxation, during which children had the opportunity to fully calm down and listen to their own thoughts and feelings. This part of the session allowed students to experience a state of deep relaxation and focus. Such experiences have a long-term impact, as children gradually learn to apply relaxation techniques outside the classroom as well.

These workshops represent an important part of the modern educational approach nurtured at Savremena Primary School. The development of emotional stability, self-confidence and the ability to cope with stress is just as important as academic knowledge. Through the Life Skills programme, students gain tools that help them better understand themselves and the world around them.

The workshop once again demonstrated how valuable such activities are for a child’s overall development. Students do not only learn how to calm themselves, but also how to be present, aware and confident. These skills form the foundation of healthy development and successful learning — today and in the future.
