Life Skills Programme: Fourth Graders Learn One of the Oldest Textile-Making Techniques

Weaving workshop brought new knowledge, patience, and creativity

As part of the Life Skills Programme, fourth-grade students at Primary School Savremena had the opportunity to take part in an engaging and educational weaving workshop, where they were introduced to one of the oldest techniques of textile production. Through this hands-on activity, students developed fine motor skills, practiced concentration, and discovered just how practical and useful creativity can be.

During the workshop, the students created decorative ornaments using a circular weaving technique – wrapping yarn around a base made of wooden sticks. This was their first encounter with a type of handcraft similar to traditional weaving. They carefully selected colors, followed the thread pattern, and saw how beautiful and unique forms can emerge from simple movements.

From Thread to Creation – A Journey Through History and Imagination

This workshop wasn’t only practical – it was educational on a deeper level as well. Teachers explained to the students how people once made clothes and fabric long before factories and modern machines existed. The students listened with curiosity as they learned about different fibers, colors, and traditional methods, all while crafting their own personal souvenirs to remember this special lesson.

Through play, hands-on work, and exploration, the students realized the value of handmade items and how important skills such as patience, precision, and perseverance are – not only in weaving, but in everyday life.

Art in Their Hands: Life Skills in the Truest Sense

The Life Skills Programme at Primary School Savremena aims to prepare students for practical, emotional, and creative challenges they may face in everyday life, while also inspiring them to discover and nurture talents that often remain hidden in traditional academic subjects.

The weaving workshop was a perfect example of how handcrafts can help children develop focus, teamwork, self-expression, and respect for tradition. Our fourth graders left the workshop proud of what they had created – enriched by a meaningful experience that brought both new knowledge and a beautiful memory.
