Encyclopedia as a Gateway to Knowledge

Learning Through Exploration

Year 1 students at Savremena Elementary School had the opportunity to explore the world around them in an engaging and stimulating way through working with encyclopedias. This activity was designed as a combination of reading, research, and teamwork, with the goal of developing curiosity, reading comprehension, and the ability to share knowledge with others. Working in small groups, students browsed through encyclopedias, carefully observed illustrations, and read age-appropriate texts. Each page opened the door to new discoveries, questions, and ideas, transforming books into a powerful tool for exploration. Group work encouraged collaboration and communication, as students selected the most interesting facts together, discussed what they had read, and supported one another in understanding new concepts.

From curiosity to knowledge: Learning through sharing

After the research phase, each group selected the most interesting information they had discovered and presented it to their classmates. Students enthusiastically shared new knowledge, from fascinating facts about animals to interesting insights about nature and the world around them. This part of the activity was particularly valuable, as it helped students develop their speaking and presentation skills in a supportive environment. By presenting their findings, students practiced expressing their ideas clearly, while also learning to listen actively, ask questions, and engage in discussion. The classroom became a space of shared learning, where every student contributed to the overall experience. This exchange of knowledge reinforced their understanding and made learning more meaningful and memorable.

Developing skills and a love for learning

This type of activity supports the development of essential skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and independent learning. Through working with encyclopedias, students learned how to find relevant information, understand it, and identify key ideas, while also connecting different concepts and gaining a broader perspective of the world. Equally important, this experience nurtures a love for reading. When students discover that books can be engaging and inspiring, they build a positive attitude towards learning that stays with them over time. At Savremena Elementary School, we believe that meaningful learning happens when students are actively involved—when they explore, ask questions, and discover answers through their own experience.
