Learning through tradition and togetherness

In class 3-1, a workshop titled “Holidays and Traditions” was held, dedicated to understanding Christmas customs and the values they carry. The workshop was led by Marija Džaleta, the mother of Petar Džaleta, who introduced students to the meaning of traditional practices through hands-on experience and open discussion. Rather than learning about customs only in theory, students actively participated in one of the most recognizable Christmas traditions – planting Christmas wheat.

The workshop was designed to connect knowledge, experience, and emotion. Instead of simply listening, students were encouraged to ask questions, take part in the activity, and reflect on why traditions are preserved and passed down through generations. In this way, tradition was presented as a living value rather than something belonging only to the past.

Christmas wheat as a symbol of growth and hope

The central part of the workshop was planting Christmas wheat, a tradition symbolizing new beginnings, progress, prosperity, and hope. Students carefully listened to explanations about the meaning of wheat in Christmas traditions and how this custom is practiced in different regions. Step by step, they planted the wheat themselves, learning how to prepare it properly, water it, and take care of it.

While working, students talked about what wheat represents and why it is connected to the holiday season. The activity encouraged them to think about patience, care, and the time needed for something to grow – not only a plant, but also knowledge, relationships, and personal values. Planting the wheat became an opportunity to discuss growth, responsibility, and the importance of nurturing what we want to develop.

This part of the workshop was especially engaging for the students because it allowed them to connect symbolism with personal experience. Every child had the chance to participate, and the activity unfolded in a calm, focused, and curious atmosphere.

When school and family come together

The workshop gained additional value from the fact that it was led by a parent, further strengthening the connection between school and family. Parental involvement in school activities helps create an open and supportive learning environment in which children see knowledge as something shared and nurtured together. In this case, students learned through personal experience, conversation, and direct interaction.

The “Holidays and Traditions” workshop demonstrated how important it is to offer children meaningful learning connected to real life. Through activities like this, students develop respect for tradition while also gaining an understanding of customs and values that shape them. Learning becomes experiential, and knowledge is absorbed naturally and more deeply.

At the end of the workshop, students proudly observed the wheat they had planted, knowing they would continue to care for it and follow its growth in the days ahead. This gave the activity an ongoing educational dimension, encouraging responsibility and long-term observation.

Workshops like this highlight the importance of a modern educational approach that preserves tradition while presenting it in a way that feels relevant and engaging for children. At Savremena, learning is never separated from life – it is built through experience, shared moments, and values that last.
