Globetrotters - Digital Applications That Transform the Way Children Learn Languages

Partnership with the European project Globetrotters

How Savremena Students Use Play, Technology and Digital Tools to Master New Languages
As part of the international Globetrotters Project, students of Savremena Primary School have been exploring how digital applications can support language learning in a creative, playful and completely new way. Inspired by the article “Digital Applications to Support Role-Play and the Development of Intercultural Understanding,” our students discovered how technology — when used thoughtfully — can become a space for learning, communication and empathy building.
Savremena has long embraced innovative, modern teaching practices, so digital tools are already a natural part of students’ everyday school experience. This project simply strengthened what we already live in the classroom: children learn best when they are active, curious and genuinely involved in the process.

A Digital Stage for Role-Play — When Apps Become a Theatre for Language Learning

One of the most exciting parts of the project was the use of digital applications that allow children to participate in role-play — but in a virtual environment. Through interactive simulations, students created characters, selected scenarios and stepped into “someone else’s shoes,” exploring what it feels like to think and speak from the perspective of a person from another culture or linguistic background. Applications such as Flip, TalkingPoints, ChatterPix, Avatar Creator and others enabled students to:

  • create virtual dialogues
  • animate characters speaking in a foreign language
  • solve tasks as different roles (tourist, doctor, shopkeeper, travel guide)
  • practise vocabulary through real-life simulations
  • feel more secure speaking because the digital avatar acts as a “protective shield”

This method is especially helpful for shy or hesitant learners, as it allows them to speak without pressure and encourages them to see mistakes as part of the game — not as failure. Students themselves said they loved how these apps gave their imagination space to grow and helped them use the language spontaneously, just like in real situations.

Digital applications did more than support language acquisition — they became a bridge toward understanding people and cultures around the world. Students explored how greetings differ across countries, what everyday situations look like in different places, and why understanding another person’s perspective is essential.

Through digital stories, comics, simulations and short animated scenes, students:

  • practised recognising emotions
  • developed active listening
  • observed how culture influences communication
  • strengthened respect for diversity

All these experiences helped them understand that language is not only a communication tool — it is a way of connecting with others. That is exactly what the Globetrotters Project promotes: learning languages through experience, culture and empathy.

Technology as a Learning Ally — When Apps Encourage Children to Speak

Digital applications offer a unique advantage: they give students the confidence to speak.
Voice-recording tasks, interactive dialogues and animations helped children practise pronunciation, rhythm and expression. Students listened to themselves, corrected mistakes and improved naturally — without fear of judgment.

Teachers noticed that children felt more relaxed, expressive and willing to experiment in this environment. Digital platforms became a safe space where learners use language freely, creatively and confidently — which is essential for successful language development.

The implementation of digital tools within the Globetrotters Project demonstrated that modern education is not just about learning rules, but about strengthening the whole person — a child who knows how to communicate, think critically, respect other cultures and speak without fear.

Savremena Primary School continues to uphold its mission: to provide learning experiences that motivate, inspire and prepare students for a world where knowledge, understanding and communication matter more than ever.
