Global Perspectives: School rules and strange laws around the world

Rules That Connect the World

As part of their Global Perspectives class, fourth-grade students of Savremena Primary School explored the topic “School Rules and Strange Laws Around the World” through an engaging project that combined learning, research, and creativity.

Throughout this project, students discovered how rules shape life in schools as well as in society, and why they are essential for the functioning of communities. The classroom turned into a small research hub where children analyzed various examples of school rules and laws from across the globe. In doing so, they developed critical thinking skills, teamwork, and the ability to compare cultures and values that influence people’s everyday lives around the world.

Our School Rules

The first part of the project focused on the rules that apply in their own classroom and school. Together, students discussed why rules are important, how they contribute to order, safety, and mutual respect. Through drawings, posters, and short presentations, they shared their ideas of rules as something that doesn’t limit — but helps a community work better.

The results were fantastic: from colorful “classroom rules” posters to short comics and stories where students illustrated everyday school situations. This activity clearly showed how well children can recognize the importance of respect, cooperation, and responsibility.

Fascinating Laws Around the World

In the second part of the project, students explored unusual laws from different countries. They were fascinated to learn, for example, that in some places chewing gum in public is not allowed, wearing camouflage clothing can be illegal, and flushing the toilet after a certain hour is prohibited.

Through laughter and discussion, they reflected on how culture, history, and traditions influence the rules that exist in every society. This activity helped them develop an understanding of diversity and learn that every community has its own way of maintaining harmony and order. At the same time, they noticed cultural similarities and understood that the core purpose of rules and laws is always the same — to protect people and help them live together in harmony.

Creative Work and Presentations

Working in teams, students created posters, drawings, and written works, which they later presented to their classmates. Each group found its own creative way to approach the topic — from illustrated classroom rules to “maps” showcasing the strangest laws from around the world.

Through collaboration, they learned how ideas evolve, how to listen to one another, and how teamwork brings out the best in everyone. The classroom atmosphere was filled with laughter, curiosity, and pride in their shared achievements.

Why Rules Matter

Through this project, students learned that rules are much more than a list of restrictions — they are the foundation of every community, a way for people to live together with respect and understanding. When rules are created collectively, they become an expression of trust and shared values.

The children realized that the difference between laws, rules, and customs often lies in context — but their purpose remains the same: to preserve what is important for everyone. The project “School Rules and Strange Laws Around the World” demonstrated how global topics can be taught in a fun, creative, and deeply meaningful way.
