Epic Poetry in the Digital Age: Third-Grade Students Creatively Explored the Poem “Marko Kraljević and Bey Kostadin”
What Would Marko Kraljević’s Instagram Look Like?
This week, the students of class III-3 took a creative and innovative approach to exploring traditional epic poetry by working on the poem “Marko Kraljević and Bey Kostadin”. Through group work, they not only deepened their understanding of epic themes and motifs but also transformed them into a modern context, using digital and artistic forms of expression.
The goal of this task was to encourage students to immerse themselves in the epic world, analyze the characterization, conflicts, and values presented in the poem, and adapt them to contemporary times, demonstrating how epic poetry remains relevant today.
One of the most exciting activities was creating Instagram profiles for Marko Kraljević and Bey Kostadin. The first group of students was assigned the task of designing what Marko’s Instagram would look like if he lived today – what kind of photos he would post, the captions he would write, the stories he would share, and his overall communication style with followers.
Meanwhile, the second group imagined Bey Kostadin’s Instagram profile, exploring how he would present himself to the public. Would he showcase his wealth and power, portraying himself as a noble ruler, or would he try to gain influence in a different way?
The students approached this task with great creativity, designing interesting posts, engaging stories, and witty captions, demonstrating how epic heroes might fit into the world of social media today.
Epic Poetry as a Comic Strip and a Play – A New Perspective on Old Stories

The third group was challenged to select the most exciting scene from the poem and present it in comic strip form. Through drawings and short dialogues, they captured the epic atmosphere and the intensity of the conflict between Marko Kraljević and Bey Kostadin.
The fourth group took on the task of turning the poem into a dramatic script with humorous elements. Their script gave a fresh and funny twist to the traditional epic tale, bringing the characters to life with modernized dialogue and humorous interactions that made the epic story even more engaging for their peers.
What Would Marko and Bey Kostadin Argue About Today?
The fifth group tackled an interesting question – what would Marko Kraljević and Bey Kostadin argue about if they lived today? Would it be a battle for social media influence, a debate about historical facts, or perhaps a disagreement about modern values and status?
Students presented their version of a contemporary dispute between these legendary figures in written form, using imaginative dialogues and irony to show how epic heroes can still be relevant in today’s society.
Creativity and Epic Poetry Go Hand in Hand
Through this project, students demonstrated how epic poetry can be engaging and how its themes can be adapted to the modern world through various artistic and digital forms. This activity not only helped them gain a deeper understanding of epic motifs, characters, and symbolism, but also encouraged them to interpret and express them in their own unique way.
Their enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication proved that traditional literature can be just as exciting and relevant as contemporary stories – when approached the right way.
Congratulations to the students of III-3 for bringing epic poetry into a new dimension and showing that tradition and the modern world can go hand in hand!
