Classroom Without Walls: Year 3 and Year 4 Students Discovered Avala
A trip filled with knowledge, exploration, and togetherness
Year 3 and Year 4 students of Savremena Primary School spent an unforgettable day at Avala as part of the “Classroom Without Walls” activity. Through an engaging tour and socialising in nature, they had the opportunity to learn many things about this important symbol of Belgrade and Serbia, while also developing curiosity, team spirit, and a love for learning.
At Savremena, “Classroom Without Walls” has traditionally marked the beginning of every school year. This concept of learning in nature and through practical activities allows students to approach school in a relaxed and creative way, while at the same time strengthening friendships and connections with their teachers.

Exploring Avala
During the tour, students discovered many interesting facts about Avala – a mountain rising above Belgrade at 511 metres above sea level, which for centuries has been a natural refuge and source of inspiration. They were particularly impressed by the Avala Tower, one of Belgrade’s most recognisable landmarks, and the Monument to the Unknown Hero, which reminded them of the importance of history and culture.
Learning on the move
While walking and exploring, students learned in a different way – through direct experience. At each stop on the tour, they discovered new facts from geography, history, and natural sciences, showing that knowledge becomes more lasting when connected to personal experience and emotion.
Nature as a classroom
Spending time on Avala allowed students to develop ecological awareness and learn how important it is to preserve nature. They enjoyed the greenery, fresh air, and beautiful views of Belgrade, while also realising how much nature can enrich their learning experience.
A memorable start to the school year
“Classroom Without Walls” at Savremena Primary School has for years been connecting students through friendship, play, and exploration. Trips like this help children begin the new school year with joy, stronger bonds, and full of energy for the challenges ahead.
