During their time in Budimlija, students explored nature in a way that encouraged active thinking and the connection of knowledge. Walking through forests and fields, they observed seasonal changes, identified plants, and learned to notice details that often go unseen. The sounds of nature, the flow of streams, and the awakening of spring became part of a unique learning experience that cannot be replicated in a classroom alone. Students were especially excited about recognizing plants and discovering small “natural wonders,” which helped them connect what they had learned in school with the real world. Through this process, they developed an investigative mindset, asked questions, and drew conclusions, strengthening their critical thinking skills.
In addition to exploring nature, an important part of the experience was learning about life in rural areas – both in the past and today. Through conversations and direct experience, students gained insight into how people lived, worked, and created in earlier times, as well as how these values are preserved today. A particularly inspiring moment was learning about Momčilo Gavrić, which opened a meaningful discussion about important values such as courage, perseverance, responsibility, and respect. In this way, students did not only acquire knowledge, but also developed an understanding of the values that shape individuals and society. The combination of knowledge and values makes this approach to learning especially meaningful and impactful.
Knowledge that stays – through experience, creativity, and community
After their time in nature, students expressed their impressions and observations through creative classroom activities. Through drawing, discussion, and sharing experiences, they demonstrated their ability to transform what they had experienced into personal expression, while also developing creativity and communication skills. This stage of the learning process is particularly important, as it allows students to reflect on their experiences, deepen their understanding, and connect new knowledge with their own perspective. Through this reflection, learning becomes more meaningful and long-lasting.
These activities also contributed to the development of teamwork and a strong sense of community among students. Through shared exploration, exchanging ideas, and supporting one another, they built relationships based on trust and mutual respect. At the same time, they developed self-confidence, as they were encouraged to express their thoughts, ask questions, and actively participate in the learning process. At Savremena Primary School, this approach to learning is highly valued – one that encourages active participation, experiential learning, and the connection between theory and practice.
Budimlija was much more than a field trip – it was a space where learning was experienced through all the senses, through movement, discovery, collaboration, and joy. These experiences remain as some of the most valuable lessons, as they shape not only knowledge, but also attitudes, thinking, and a student’s relationship with the world. This is why we believe that learning is most powerful when it is truly experienced – and Budimlija once again showed how school can become a place of inspiration, growth, and meaningful life experience. 🌿✨
