Cambridge Debate Day at Savremena: Eighth Graders Shine in English-Language Debate

Students demonstrated public speaking, argumentation, and critical thinking skills while debating relevant contemporary topics.

As part of the Cambridge Programme, eighth-grade students at Savremena took part in a special event – Cambridge Debate Day, where they debated in English on two timely and thought-provoking topics: “Plastic Bags-Pros and Cons?” and “Instagram-For or Against?”

During a lively and engaging discussion, students presented opposing views, defended their arguments, and listened to their peers with respect. The classroom transformed into a true debate arena, clearly showing how thoughtfully and passionately the students approached the topics.

Plastic and Ecology – A Modern Dilemma

The first debate focused on whether plastic bags are a practical solution or an environmental issue that should be eliminated. Students analysed the advantages and disadvantages of plastic use, explored its impact on the environment, and weighed both economic and ecological arguments. The debate highlighted how aware young people are of environmental challenges and their willingness to consider them critically.

Social Media and Youth Mental Health

The second topic – “Instagram: Inspiration or Threat?” – sparked discussion on the impact of social media on self-esteem, identity, and emotional wellbeing among young people. Students spoke about the benefits of the platform for creative expression and staying connected, but also warned of the risks posed by constant exposure and comparison with others. The conversation was dynamic, empathetic, and mature.

Preparing for the World of Tomorrow

Through this event, students developed not only their English-language and public speaking skills, but also critical thinking, teamwork, and empathy. Cambridge Debate Day once again showed how important it is to give young people the opportunity to express themselves, challenge ideas, and learn from one another – because word by word, they’re shaping the world.
