Big Brother, Big Sister — Fifth Graders as Teachers
When Students Become Teachers
As part of the “Big Brother, Big Sister” school project, an extraordinary math class was held at Savremena Primary School — fifth graders took on the role of teachers and taught their younger peers, first graders. This activity combined play, learning, and mutual support, creating a unique atmosphere where students learned together, collaborated, and built trust.

Learning from a Different Perspective
The fifth graders thoroughly prepared for their new role — the role of a teacher. They designed fun tasks and simple explanations to help their younger classmates better understand basic mathematical concepts.
During the lesson, they demonstrated exceptional creativity, patience, and responsibility, while the first graders followed attentively and participated actively. Through this approach, math became fun and accessible, and the classroom was filled with a cheerful and motivating atmosphere.
Bonds That Grow from an Early Age
The “Big Brother, Big Sister” project aims to connect older and younger students through shared activities that nurture empathy, support, and a sense of belonging to the school community.
While the fifth graders learned how to take on leadership and mentorship roles, the first graders were given the chance to learn through play and interaction with someone they trust and look up to. This exchange of roles strengthened friendships and showed how valuable inter-student collaboration across generations can be.
The School’s Role in Creating a Supportive Environment
Savremena Primary School places special emphasis on activities that foster the development of emotional intelligence and social skills. Through projects like this, children don’t just learn academic content — they learn how to be responsible, empathetic, and supportive members of the community.
This math class showed that learning is not a one-way process but an opportunity for both older and younger students to grow together.
Learning Together, Growing Together
The “Big Brother, Big Sister” project will continue in the coming period through various activities and workshops, proving once again that school is not only a place of knowledge but also a place where friendship, mutual respect, and support are nurtured.
