A workshop on Russian culture and art

A Lesson that unites culture, creativity, and community

In Savremena Primary School, a special workshop dedicated to Russian culture and art was held. The workshop was led by Maria Khorenko, the mother of student Misha Khorenko, and this personal touch made the whole experience even more meaningful. During the class, students had the opportunity to see authentic examples of traditional Russian crafts and listen to fascinating stories about their origins and symbolism.

This was not just an educational activity — it was an inspiring cultural experience, where learning happened through live interaction rather than textbooks. The classroom was filled with curiosity, focus, and creative energy that went far beyond a standard art class.

Painting wooden boards — A creative connection with tradition

The centerpiece of the workshop was an activity in which students painted wooden boards with traditional Russian motifs. Inspired by the distinctive styles and patterns, they used colors, shapes, and lines to create their own interpretations of folk designs.

Through careful painting and detailed work, the children developed fine motor skills, concentration, and a sense of aesthetics. Each board became a unique piece of art — a blend of cultural heritage and childlike imagination. This hands-on learning approach encouraged creative thinking and a deeper connection to what they were learning.

Discovering culture through art and personal stories

One of the greatest values of this workshop was the chance for students to explore a new culture through a personal, interactive experience. Instead of abstract concepts, they were presented with real handmade objects and a living story told by someone connected to the tradition. In this way, Russian culture became something they could see, touch, and feel.

This kind of experience helps children develop cultural awareness, respect for diversity, and a genuine curiosity about the world around them. Art, in this context, becomes a bridge that connects people, cultures, and generations.

Shared learning — A bridge between school and family

What made this workshop even more special was that it was led by a parent. This turned the classroom into a shared space for learning, collaboration, and connection. When parents take an active role in school activities, children feel more supported, and the school community grows stronger. These moments show that learning is not limited to formal education — it can be built through shared experiences and mutual respect. For students, this was a meaningful moment that fostered trust, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

The power of experiential learning

This workshop showed how powerful learning through experience can be. When children paint, listen to stories, and actively participate, their understanding becomes deeper and longer lasting. Art and culture stop being just lessons — they become part of their personal world. Activities like this build patience, creativity, empathy, respect for differences, and a sense of shared creation. It’s the kind of learning that goes beyond the classroom — preparing students for life.
