A Different Kind of Nature Class at the Blueberry Plantation in Brovik

Students took part in the harvest and brought home sweet fruits

Blueberries are not just a delicious snack — they also sparked the curiosity and investigative spirit of our young learners. As part of the “Parents at Work” project, the second-grade students of class II-1 from Savremena Primary School visited the blueberry plantation owned by the family of their classmate Oleg, located in the picturesque village of Brovik near Obrenovac. A bus full of eager little explorers was welcomed by rows of ripe, deep-blue berries and the fresh scent of fruit, promising a day to remember.

Learning Among the Blueberry Bushes

Even though they’ve only just begun their journey into the world of natural sciences, the students received one of the best hands-on lessons. The plantation owners — Oleg’s parents — explained the entire process of growing blueberries, from seedlings to juicy fruit. The children learned that patience is key, that blueberry bushes prefer slightly acidic, humus-rich soil, and that they are protected from birds by special nets. They also discovered how bees help with pollination, and why morning dew during ripening season is precious. This living “open-air textbook” made the experience fun and engaging, as questions poured out faster than a summer rain.

The Joy of Harvesting and a “Well-Earned” Reward

After theory — practice! Equipped with sun hats, gloves, and buckets, the students got to work picking berries. Buckets quickly filled with the dark blue fruit, while laughter echoed through the rows. Of course, a few berries had to be taste-tested on the spot — as the young harvesters said, “You have to check the quality!” Their efforts were rewarded: each student took home a box full of freshly picked fruit, perfect for a family breakfast or a delicious smoothie.

The visit to the Brovik plantation showed that the best lessons often happen outside the classroom — in places where children can see, touch, and experience what they’re learning. This outing inspired our students to appreciate the work of farmers, understand the importance of healthy eating, and perhaps even start their own green projects one day. Savremena Primary School will continue to connect its youngest learners with the real world of work — because knowledge always tastes best when you “pick it yourself.”
